S. Balakrishnan dead

Ramanathapuram: Former TNCC president S. Balakrishnan died at his house at Paramakudi near here on Saturday.

He was 72 and is survived by his wife, four sons and a daughter.

He met with a road accident at Paramakudi about 20 months ago. He was treated at a hospital in Madurai.

He was discharged from the hospital on Friday following the deterioration in his health.

Mr. Balakrishnan represented the Muthukulathur constituency in the State Assembly thrice. He also represented the Kadaladi constituency from 2001 to 2006.

Mr. Balakrishnan, a staunch supporter of G.K. Moopanar, held the post of Leader of the Opposition from 1996 to 2001.

Hundreds of people, party activists and relatives paid their last respects to him at his house.

Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G.K. Vasan, State Ministers K.R. Periakaruppan, Suba. Thangavelan and a host of dignitaries placed wreaths on the body of Mr. Balakrishnan.

The funeral will be held on Sunday morning at Paramakudi.
