CHENNAI: About 20 per cent of petroleum products sold in Chennai is adulterated. However, the situation in the city seems to be far better when compared to the adulteration figure at the national level which is 40 per cent, according to R. Desikan, trustee, Centre for Consumer Education Research Testing and Training (CONCERT). Addressing presspersons on a seminar on "Curbing adulteration of petroleum products" to be held here on June 26, he said adulteration was being done en route when the tankers brought the products from the depots to the filling stations. In 1997, the adulteration was about 90 per cent in the city and thanks to oil companies applying their mind in greater measure, and the efforts of dealers and consumer groups, the menace had come down now. However, the companies could do more. R. Balasubramanian, Director, Fuel Testing Laboratory, and S. Sainath, another trustee of CONCERT, said a check in March 2005 revealed that out of the nearly 155 petrol outlets in the city, 15-20 per cent of them were selling petrol suspected to be adulterated. The seminar to be held at the Anna Institute of Management, R.A. Puram, will discuss the issue and the steps to curb adulteration. The Chairmen of oil companies will be among those who will participate in the programme.
