AIADMK, MDMK boycott all-party panel

CHENNAI: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have refused to join the all-party committee set up by the State Government for purchase of colour television.

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi told the media here on Saturday that both the parties in separate letters had said that the scheme was not viable and hence there was no point in joining the committee. However, the AIADMK's another ally, Dalit Panthers had agreed to join the panel and nominated its MLA K. Selvam on the committee. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam also did not join the committee. While thanking the Government for inviting the party to join the committee, the party leader Vijayakanth expressed his inability to join it as he would be busy with party work. — Special Correspondent

Additional Public Prosecutors appointed

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has appointed four Additional Public Prosecutors each for the principal Bench of the Madras High Court here and its Bench at Madurai. Appointed in consultation with the High Court, these Additional Public Prosecutors would represent the Government in criminal matters.

The advocates who have been appointed for Chennai are: N.R. Elango, C.T. Selvam, Babu Muthumeeran and P. Kumaresan. Four others -- P.N. Pandidurai, S. Samuel Raj, N. Senthur Pandian and V. Kasinathan -- will appear for the Government before the Madurai Bench, according to a notification issued by Public Secretary D. Jothi Jagarajan. — Special Correspondent

Regional training conference

CHENNAI: The 63rd round regional training conference of Tamil Nadu North Region, Chennai, for conducting the annual survey to collect socio-economic data on various multi-stage subjects, has been organised at Shastri Bhavan conference hall from June 28 to 30.

Representatives of the State Statistical Bureau of Tamil Nadu/Pondicherry and officials of NSSO, Tamil Nadu North region, will participate in the workshop, organised by the Directorate of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), Field Operations Division, Tamil Nadu (North), according to an official press release. — Special Correspondent

Lateral entry admission

CHENNAI: Diploma candidates who wish to apply under the lateral entry category to the third semester B.E/B.Tech courses in the College of Engineering, Guindy; Alagappa College of Technology, Guindy and the Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet can apply on or before June 30, according to a press release here. The applications can be obtained in person from the Office of the Commissioner of Technical Education, Chennai. Cost of application is Rs 100 and registration fee is Rs 200. Payments can be made in the form of demand draft drawn in favour of the Secretary, Second Year Engineering Admissions, ACCET, Karaikkudi, payable at Karaikkudi.

Supplementary exams

CHENNAI: Private candidates who failed to apply for the matriculation/Anglo Indian special supplementary examinations to be held on July 2006 but wish to do so now can apply from June 26 to 30, a press release here said. Last date for submission of filled in applications is June 30 and forms will be available at the zonal offices of the Director of Government Examinations at Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchy, Cuddalore and Vellore. — Special Correspondent

Huts gutted

TIRUCHI: As many as 16 huts were destroyed in a fire at Kudhupapallam in the city on Saturday. However, there was no casualty. According to Fire and Rescue Services Department sources, the fire broke out in one of the huts and rapidly spread to the other ones, which were are all situated close-by.

Following an alert, three fire tenders were sent to the spot to douse the flames. It took nearly an hour for the fire fighters to bring the situation under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the sources added.

Illicit arrack

destroyed

TIRUCHI: Continuing their raids against illicit distillers in the district, the Tiruchi Rural Police on Saturday arrested 76 persons including 25 women and destroyed illicit arrack and fermented wash.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 106.38 feet on Saturday.

The inflow was 4,616 cusecs and the outflow 12,000 cusecs.— Staff Reporter

Four persons injured

Tuticorin : Four persons sustained injuries when a van hit a pole of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board at Authoor near here on Saturday.

The police said Premkumar, van driver, Ramasamy, Narayanan and Vasantha Kumari were hospitalised. The Authoor police are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Governor's visit

ERODE: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will visit Erode on June 26. He will award the degree to about 400 students of Kongu Arts and Science College, Nanjanapuram, at a function on June 26. The Governor will leave in the evening on the same day. He will also deliver the graduation day address. The Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, C. Subramaniam, will deliver keynote address.

Teachers' counselling

ERODE: Counselling for higher secondary, high school, middle and primary school teachers seeking transfer was conducted on Saturday. The Chief Educational Officer P. Kuppusamy conducted the counselling and he had received more than 800 applications. Orders were given immediately for the vacancies within the district and also willing transfers were also made. On the spot orders were granted to the teachers. - Staff Reporter

Jewellers' strike

ERODE: For the second day in succession on Saturday, 200-odd jewellery shop owners in Erode closed their shops, opposing police action. Two days ago, the Perundurai police along with an accused came to Erode and questioned five jewellers. The police told them that they have recovered more than one hundred sovereigns from the accused. They also took five jewellers in police custody for further inquiry. The jewellers said they are not purchasing stolen jewellery. They complain that false allegations are made against them. Meanwhile, the representatives of the Jewellers Association are trying for negotiation with the police. - Staff Reporter

Cut in tariff

ERODE: The job work textile dyers, who are engaged in dyeing the bed sheets at Chennimalai, demands concession in the electricity tariff. On behalf of the Job Work Dyers Association of Chennimalai its president M. Ponnusamy sent a memorandum pleading the Chief Minister to reduce the tariff. The memorandum stated that there were about 55 job work dyers doing yarn-dyeing works. They have installed reverse osmosis plants and for the plant the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is collecting Rs. five a unit of electricity consumed by them. This was too high and so the government may grant them some concession.

Extra kerosene

ERODE: The ration cardholders would get extra kerosene for the month of June, said Collector D. Karthikeyan on Saturday. He said the ration cardholders in Erode, Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Dharapuram, Sathyamangalam, Surampatty, Veerappanchatram, Kasipalayam and Punjai Puliampatty municipal areas and also in town panchayat areas would get two litres of kerosene extra along with their usual quota for the month of June 2006. Similarly the ration cardholders of other rural panchayat areas also will get one litre extra kerosene. - Staff Reporter

4 killed in accidents

KRISHNAGIRI: Four persons were killed in various road accidents in the district on Friday. The police said Monika (4) of Thenkanikottai was standing on the roadside, when a tractor ran over her. In another accident, a tractor driver, Pachiappan (19) of Nallanur, was killed on the spot when the tractor capsized.

In Bargur, a mini lorry hit Pachakannan (57) of Jegadevi killing him on the spot. In another accident, Govindaraj (32) was riding a motorcycle on the Krishnagiri-Hosur main road, when the vehicle hit a road-roller.

Additional kerosene for cardholders

DINDIGUL : Eligible ration cardholders in the district will get additional quantity of kerosene this month.

Ration cardholders residing in municipal and town panchayats will get two litres of kerosene and cardholders in villages would get one litre in addition to the allotted quantity per month, said the Collector, R. Vasuki, in a release here on Saturday.

She appealed to cardholders to purchase kerosene from respective ration shops.

Rice seized

SIVAKASI : The Food Cell - Crime Investigation Department officials seized 99 bags of rice meant to be sold through public distribution system from a godown here on Saturday. The police said each bag contained 50 kg of rice. The police are on the lookout for a suspect. This is the third major haul of smuggled PDS rice this month in Virudhunagar district

Bid to abduct

woman, 8 held

VIRUDHUNAGAR : The police arrested eight persons, who tried to abduct a 19-year-old woman, on Friday.

The police said the abduction was done to help one of the accused, Santhanapandi, to marry her. Santhanapandi was already married to another woman. The Tiruchuzhi police have registered a case.

Jewels missing

Tuticorin : Some unidentified persons allegedly took away jewels kept inside the bag of a bus passenger here on Friday.

The police said S Ramalingam, a retired engineer with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, boarded a town bus after taking 8.5 sovereigns of jewels kept in the locker of a bank here. When he alighted from the bus at the Old Bus Stand, he found that the jewels were missing from the bag.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 119.80 feet with an inflow of 1811 cusecs and a discharge of 350 cusecs. The level in Vaigai dam was 48.36 feet with a discharge of 800 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 4047 mcft. Periyar dam received 33 mm followed by Tekkadi and Marudhanadi 18 mm each, Gudalur 6, Veerapandi 3 and Shanmuganadi 2 mm. — Staff Reporter
