ACB trap

VIJAYAWADA: Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths raided the residential quarters and other houses of S. Nagasiva Rao, district manager of Andhra Pradesh Housing Development Corporation, and took him into custody after seizing "assets disproportionate to his income." Simultaneous raids were made on his houses in Machilipatnam, a three-storeyed building in Guntur and another house in Tenali.

ACB DSP Mahipal Reddy said that Rs. 1.30 lakhs in cash, promissory notes for Rs. 8 lakhs, documents for 15 acres of land in Tenali, two plots in Guntur and another two plots in Hyderabad worth over Rs. 50 lakhs were found. - Staff Reporter

4 constables hurt as hand grenade explodes

Kakinada: Four constables of the APSP Third Battalion deployed on special duty at the armed police outpost at Pedamallapuram in Sankhavaram mandal were injured, on of them critically, when a hand grenade exploded accidentally on Saturday. The condition of Bala Venkata Krishna, in whose hands the grenade exploded, was stated to be critical. Additional SP (Operations) V. Satyanarayana, who visited the hospital, said that it was a clear case of negligence. An enquiry was ordered, he added. - Correspondent

Held with hide of panther

ONGOLE: The police have arrested Charla Pavankumar of Guntur near a hotel here and recovered hides of two tigers and one panther.

However, forest officials found that the two hides of tiger were fake and that of the panther genuine. The accused person, who was produced in a court, was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days, Forest Range Officer E. Mallikarjunaiah told newspersons on Saturday. He said panthers were endangered species and were included in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Pavankumar, however, pleaded ignorance.

JVV plea to poll panel on liquor sale

HYDERABAD: The Jana Vignana Vedika has requested the State Election Commission to stop supply of liquor by the Andhra Pradesh Beverages Corporation from June 25 to July 2 in view of the elections.

A delegation of the vedika submitted a memorandum to SEC Commissioner A.V.S. Reddy on Saturday, apprehending free distribution of liquor by candidates in the fray. The liquor would be lifted from 6,000 retail shops that get their supplies from the corporation.

Mr. Reddy assured the delegation that teams equipped with video cameras were already in the field to monitor electoral malpractices, a press release said. - Special Correspondent

EMRI service in 50 more locations soon

HYDERABAD: Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) will launch its `108' service in 50 more locations by June-end. The EMRI, which completed nine months of operation in the State, said that at present the service was available in 42 cities, according to a release.

The EMRI said that it had received 40,000 emergency calls out of 17,00,000 calls and saved 3,000 lives. The average time taken from call receipt to reaching hospital was 35 minutes, it added. - Staff Reporter

TV channel CEO

ANANTAPUR: The Junior Civil Judge Court of Tadipatri on Saturday issued summons to CEO of a television news channel Ravi Prakash and its Anantapur correspondent J.Y. Nagi Reddy to attend the court on July 28 in a defamation case filed by Minister for Panchayat Raj and Endowments J.C. Diwakar Reddy.

Judge P. Venugopala Rao issued the summons after watching the recorded video footage of the news telecast in the channel on March 18 and later submitted to the court in the form of a CD by counsel for the Minister C.O. Ravi.

10 cases settled

at Lok Adalat

CHITTOOR: Principal Senior Civil Judge-cum-Secretary of Legal Services Authority Virupaksha Dattatreya Gouda on Saturday said that 10 cases were settled in the Lok Adalat held on June 24 on the premises of district court under the supervision of District Judge-cum-Chairman K. Apparao. Three civil cases and seven criminal cases covering an amount of Rs. 24,000 and Rs. 3,45,000 respectively were settled. - Correspondent

KURNOOL: Andhra Bank is celebrating "AB Utsav" to mobilise deposits between June 12 and July 11, according to a press note by Deputy General Manager G. Satyanarayana. He said during the Utsav period the bank would offer deposit rates of 7.5 per cent on five-year deposits and an extra 0.5 per cent for senior citizens. HYDERABAD: Sheep-rearers from Ranga Reddy district got an insight into rearing of the animal and the steps to be taken to save them from diseases, at a one-week training programme held at Shamirpet. They were trained in sheep grazing, sheep management, fodder cultivation, breeding and were also educated about the diseases and the measures to be taken to contain the disease. Different varieties of fodder were also demonstrated during the trainingin which 33 sheep-rearers from nearby villages participated. The trainees were also given a book and a kit. Bhaskar Rao, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, inaugurated the programme. - Staff Reporter

Ban on carrying licensed weapons

KURNOOL: Collector M. Dana Kishore prohibited license holders of firearms from carrying the weapons until the local bodies elections are complete, according to a statement here.

Also, those who were bailed out in criminal cases, against whom arrest warrants were pending and those with criminal history were asked to surrender the weapons in the police stations. The orders would be in force till one week after the results were declared. - Staff Reporter

Funds sought to

conduct elections

VIZIANAGARAM: The district administration has no funds to meet the election expenditure. The administration has sent proposals to the Government for release of Rs. 2.80 crores for conducting the ZPTC and MPTC elections scheduled on June 28. The Government so far has not responded positively to its request. Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Office A. Jagadish told The Hindu on Saturday that instructions were issued to mandal parishads to release Rs. 50,000 from its general funds for the present. He hoped that the Government would release funds in a day or two. - Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary K. Haribabu participated in a door-to-door campaign in Gajapathinagaram Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency on Saturday. Appealing to the people to vote for Mr. Raju, Dr. Haribabu criticised the Congress Government for the soaring prices of essential commodities and also for increasing the prices of diesel and petrol. Weapons to be kept

in safe custody

Kakinada: All the gun licence holders in the district have to deposit their weapons at their police stations concerned for safe custody till July 4 in view of the elections being held to ZPTC and MPTC seats, according to M. Subrahmanyam, East Godavari Collector. However, nationalised banks were exempted from this order by the State Election Commission. - Correspondent

Olympic run flagged off

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector M. Subrahmanyam flagged off the Olympic run at the district sports stadium grounds here on Saturday.

Students, sportsmen and people from various walks of life took part in the run. Olympic Association honorary president Y. D. Rama Rao presented certificates to the participants. Executive president P. Chiranjivini Kumary presented a certificate and a memento to the Collector. Olympic Association secretary K.
