Laxman Kumar in the race with Venkat Swamy's blessing; Arepalli Mohan has MSR's support

  • Janashakti naxal withdraws from fray
  • BJP contesting from 35 mandals
  • TRS restricts itself to 13 mandals

KARIMNAGAR: Both Congress and TDP candidates are making all-out efforts to snatch the coveted Zilla Parishad chairman post in Karimnagar district.

In the Congress, Adluri Laxman Kumar is in the race for the chairman post with support of Peddapalli MP G. Venkat Swamy. Though he belongs to the Godavarikhani industrial belt, he is contesting from Dharmaram mandal as ZPTC member.

Local advocate Arepalli Mohan is contesting from Thimmapur mandal with blessings of Minister for Sports M. Satyanarayana Rao. The Minister had participated in the election campaign in the mandal supporting the candidature of Mr. Mohan. These two Congress candidates, who have been projected as candidates for the ZP chairman post, are new in the field.

The TDP was projecting former Ministers -- Suddala Devaiah and Mathangi Narsaiah -- as its candidates for the post. Mr. Devaiah had been the ZP chairman before. Mr. Devaiah, who lost in the last Assembly elections from the Nerella segment, is contesting from Yellareddypet mandal. Former Janashakti naxalite Sagar, who filed his nominations from Yellareddypet mandal as ZPTC member on behalf of the Congress, had withdrawn from the contest following rejection of his nomination due to non-bailable warrants pending against him.

He is campaigning on behalf of Congress candidate A. Rajaiah in Yellareddypet mandal. Another TDP leader and former legislator Mr. Narsaiah is contesting from Dharmaram mandal against Mr. Laxman Kumar.

The TRS, which had snatched the Zilla Parishad chairman post, during the last elections by contesting from all the 57 mandals had restricted itself to 13 mandals after forging an alliance with the Congress in this elections. The BJP candidates are contesting from 35 mandals.
