NEW DELHI: Being touted as a new link between East Delhi and Old Delhi areas, the Geeta Colony bridge over the Yamuna will work as a replacement for the Old Railway Bridge and the Pontoon Bridge and reduce drastically the distance to destinations like Noida and Ghaziabad for people living in North, West and North-West Delhi. Starting right in front of Taj Enclave in Geeta Colony along the upcoming new eight-lane East Delhi Ring Road, the Geeta Colony Bridge will link East Delhi areas with Shanti Van where the bridge is planned to end. With a length of 560 metres and an estimated cost of Rs. 130 crores, the new bridge will reduce the traffic flow on ITO Bridge and also on the already congested Vikas Marg. Giving this information here after a visit to the construction site, Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia disclosed that while the Geeta Colony Bridge would be commissioned by December 2007, the disused canal road linking Karkardooma would also be opened for traffic by next year. Dr. Walia along with senior officers of Public Works Department on Friday evening took a round of various points relating to these projects to personally review the progress of work that was found to be running ahead of schedule. Dr. Walia said the new bridge over the Yamuna would be a state-of-the-art project with 10 lanes including two for cyclists and another two for pedestrians. According to Dr. Walia, work relating to construction of 30 foundation wells has been completed. The length of the bridge is 560 metres whereas the length of western approach and the eastern approach will be 1,405 and 520 metres, respectively. The bridge is being constructed with pre-cast and jerk-less technology to ensure completion in the minimum possible time. A penalty clause has also been included in the contract to avoid any delay in construction. Giving details of the Rs. 96-crore Disused Canal Road from Karkari More to Marginal Bandh Road, Dr. Walia said the new road would take 40 per cent of the burden of the busy Vikas Marg and decongest it substantially. The work on the 3 km road over Disused Canal started in December last year and is expected to be completed by February 2007 as almost 55 per cent of the work has been completed. The new road is being constructed between two densely populated areas.
