NEW DELHI: A Confederation of Indian Industry delegation led by CII (Northern Region) Chairman Adesh Gupta called on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit here this week to discuss its agenda for the Capital. Apprising the Chief Minister of CII's priorities, Mr. Gupta said it would play a catalytic role in achieving an 8.3 per cent economic growth and 10 per cent industrial growth for the year. He put forward the theme of "Nirman North" that would focus on issues pertaining to the competitiveness of the region and the States. These would include business development, agricultural competitiveness, employment generation and skills development. Ms. Dikshit informed the delegation -- comprising CII (Northern Region) Deputy Chairman Deep Kapuria, CII Chairman (Delhi State Council) Ankur Bhatia and CII (Northern Region) Regional Director Sujith Haridas -- that for the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010, the Delhi Government would require up to one lakh volunteers. To achieve this target, there was an urgent need of partnership with CII. She cited the example of Toyota which had provided cars for the games at Melbourne as a partnership avenue for the industry. Agreeing with the Chief Minister on this point, CII Chairman said there was an urgent need for establishing a Common Economic Zone, developing a shared vision for industrial development of Northern Region States in partnership with State Governments, facilitating State-level reforms and having a thrust on exports. He invited Ms. Dikshit to be a part of the upcoming Nirman North Summit
