NEW DELHI: Led by Sajjan Kumar, Congress Member of Parliament from Outer Delhi, a large number of villagers from Najafgarh and Ghumanhera appeared in the court of South-West District Deputy Commissioner Manisha Saxena at Kapashera here on Friday for a public hearing on the proposed Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) for hazardous waste to be set up at Ghumanhera. Mr. Kumar informed the Deputy Commissioner about the anger and resentment of the villagers against the proposed project. "Thousands of people from rural areas have been meeting me and other elected representatives terming the proposal as `anti rural environment' and are strongly opposed to it. The villagers have demanded immediate withdrawal of the proposal as it would disturb the natural ambience of the villages and cause pollution,'' he said. "The proposed TSDF would contain hazardous chemicals, and being near to habitation, which is only 400 metres away from the proposed site, it would pollute the environment of the area. This would affect the health of the local rural people and thousands of students studying in educational institutes situated near the village,'' he added. Mr. Kumar informed Ms. Saxena of a "goshala'' being run by members of the Jain Samaj near the proposed site for past many years. "More than a thousand cows are being fed and looked after here. And the proposed project would have an adverse effect on the health of the cows. The proposal has also hurt the sentiments of the local Jain Samaj,'' he said. Mr. Kumar also questioned the suitability of the proposed TSDF site so close to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. "Ghumanhera village is on the air-route of the airport and the construction of the dumping ground would attract birds posing a grave danger to aircraft,'' he added. Mr. Kumar urged Ms. Saxena to issue immediate orders for cancellation of the proposed TSDF in Ghumanhera.
