NEW DELHI: The leader of the House in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Jitender Kochhar, announced on Saturday that the civic body would remove silt taken out from drains even during night hours to complete de-silting work in the Capital before the onset of the monsoon. "At present, MCD is carrying out de-silting work at 850 drains. In order to achieve the target of de-silting all the 1,296 drains and ensure timely removal of silt by June 30, it is necessary that the work is carried out during the night as well. Contractors and non-government organisations have also been directed to remove silt during the night,'' said Mr. Kochhar. Conducting an extensive inspection of South Delhi drains on Saturday, Mr. Kochhar found that silt had not been removed on time from drains in the Chiragh Dilli, Sheikh Sarai and Kamal Cinema areas. He urged senior civic body officials and those from the Environment Management Services Department to carry out the work of de-silting and removal of silt in an earnest manner. Warning that "dereliction of duty would invite immediate suspension'', Mr. Kochhar disclosed that the Executive Engineer of Narela Zone, Mohan Lal, had been suspended with immediate affect after it was found that wastewater from houses in Swatantra Nagar was not being drained out. The wastewater was collecting in the streets resulting in unhygienic conditions. Mr. Kochhar said he along with senior MCD functionaries would be conducting inspections at various zones to oversee the de-silting work
