CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy and leaders of political parties expressed their condolences on the demise of Congress leader S. Balakrishnan. Mr. Karunanidhi in his message recalled the effective speeches made by Mr. Balakrishnan in the Assembly. An ardent follower of K. Kamaraj, he was a role model for young legislators.
Party posts
The TNCC chief said Mr. Balakrishnan, who was associated with Kamaraj, had occupied various party posts, including the post of TNCC president. He had served four terms as member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, including as the Opposition leader and had endeared himself to the people of his constituency. The party would observe three days' mourning and the party flag would be flown at half mast. Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, G.K. Vasan, said Balakrishnan was close to Kamaraj and G.K. Moopanar with whom he worked closely. Leader of the Congress Legislature Party D. Sudarsanam said his demise was a great loss to the party. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko, Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss, State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan and CPI State secretary D. Pandiyan, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakanth and BJP MP S. Thirunavukkakarasar were among those who conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family.
