Chennai: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala listened to Urdu poets for almost two hours under the soft lights of the Durbar Hall in Raj Bhavan on Saturday. Twenty scholars presented their work at a grand Urdu mushaira, an event similar to a poetry recital. Convenor Shahzada Parvez said this was the first time a mushaira was held at the Hall.

The Governor smiled and nodded appreciatively whenever poets used a particularly clever turn of phrase or witty verse. The audience, which included writers and scholars, burst out with a congratulatory `wah' when poets skilfully used rhythmic metre in their verse.

Prince of Arcot Mohamed Abdul Ali, poet Mukhtar Badri, former judge of Madras High Court B. Akbar Basha Khadiri and organising body Bazm-E-Adab's secretary Masood Ahmed were present. The Prince of Arcot recited poetry too.
