Udupi: Medical Education Minister and district in-charge Minister V.S. Acharya said on Saturday that multi-national company Suzlon would set up a windmill manufacturing plant in the Energy Special Economic Zone at Nandikur in Udupi district at a cost of Rs. 4,000 crore. Addressing presspersons here, Dr. Acharya said that the plant would come up on 800 acres of land, which had been marked for Special Economic Zone at Nandikur. The land was earlier marked for a thermal power plant by the NTPC, which did not materialise. The windmill manufacturing plant by Suzlon would be a zero-effluent and zero-pollution unit. It would generate employment for 5,000 youth in the district. The first unit of the plant would be commissioned by January 2007. The company would initially invest Rs. 1,000 crore. The Union Government had marked the area given to Suzlon as Energy Special Economic Zone. Dr. Acharya, MLAs Raghupati Bhat and Lalaji Mendan, had visited the plant of the company in Pondicherry recently.
Vision document
Dr. Acharya said that the first meeting of the District Planning Committee was held on Saturday. It was decided at the meeting that a five-year vision document focusing on the development of economic and social sectors would be formulated. A small committee comprising president of zilla panchayat B.N. Shankar Poojary, leader of Opposition in zilla panchayat Kota Srinivas Poojary, zilla panchayat member Bhujanga Shetty and the senior municipal councillor of Udupi Gujjady Prabhakar Nayak had been formed for this purpose. A task force would be formed which would formulate a development plan for the district.
Road widening
He said that Rs.10.4 crore had already been sanctioned by the State Government for land acquisition to widen Udupi-Manipal Road. He said that the construction of the Barkur Bridge would be completed by the end of July. He would inspect the bridge next week. The Government was planning to rejuvenate the Brahmavar Sugar Factory. Replying to a question, he said no BJP MLA had attended the dinner reportedly hosted by the chief of NICE, Ashok Kheny.
