MANGALORE: Authorities of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) may find themselves in the dock for sheer negligence in attending to road repair work at Mallikatte area in the city.

No warning sign

The half-finished work, left unattended without any barricade or warning sign, claimed the life of a motorist Ratan Joseph Pinto earlier this month. Ratan's vehicle fell into this ditch at night. Taking cognisance of the incident, Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda has instructed officials to investigate the incident and book cases against those guilty of causing Ratan's death.

Case registered

The Mangalore East police had registered a case in this regard. It was subsequently handed over to Traffic Police Inspector for investigation.

Mr. Dayananda said the open pit nearly two feet deep was filled with rainwater on night of the incident. Ratan did not notice the ditch and his vehicle fell into it. Ratan fell off the vehicle sustaining grievous injuries. Ratan was rushed to a hospital, but he succumbed to injuries.

Initially, the police sought to proceed against the Mangalore City Corporation in this regard. Corporation officials in reply to the notice issued to them said the work in question was handled by MUDA.

Action to be taken

Subsequently, the police issued notice to MUDA officials seeking an explanation from them. Action will be initiated once the reply is received. Mr. Dayananda said cases would be booked against the supervising engineer and the contractor in charge of the work under Section 304 (A) of the IPC (causing death due to negligence).
