Staff Correspondent
Udupi: Medical Education Minister and District in-charge Minister V.S. Acharya said on Saturday that Government's talks with the COMED-K were progressing smoothly. Addressing presspersons here, Dr. Acharya said that an agreement would be reached on the fee structure and seat matrix. Counselling for candidates for special category would start from June 26, while counselling for general seats would start from July 3. The seat matrix would be announced before the general counselling. There would be no confusion in counselling this time. There had been progress on the issue of opening six new medical colleges. He hoped that at least two new medical colleges would be opened this academic year. These colleges were likely to come up at Belgaum and Mandya. Even if the Government opened one medical college, it would be an achievement. While the Government had equipment for the medical colleges, staff deficiency had to be taken care of. He said that the State Government had sanctioned a First Grade College for Hiriyadka in Udupi district. Admissions for the college would begin from this academic year, Dr. Acharya said. MLA K. Raghupati Bhat and headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Naga Naik, were present.
