Anantharaman honoured

Outstanding contribution to Carnatic music

CHENNAI: The Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation Memorial Award was conferred on Parur M.S. Anantharaman for his outstanding contribution to Carnatic music for 75 years.

The foundation's meritorious awards were given to Geetha Raja (vocalist), S.R. Mahadeva Sarma (violinist) and Vaikom Sri Gopalakrishnan (mrindangam and ghatam).

While Mr. Anantharaman (82) was given a cash award of Rs.10, 000, a `ponnadai,' and a memento, the three others got a cash award of Rs.2,000 each, a `ponnadai' and a memento.

P. Obul Reddy, industrialist, who presided over the presentation, said every year, outstanding musicians and upcoming artists were honoured to perpetuate the glorious contribution of the late Maharajapuram Santhanam to Carnatic music.

Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, and Va.Ve Su, principal, R.K.M. Vivekananda College, offered felicitations.
