Public help sought for city development

Staff Reporter

MCV Commissioner for formation of resident associations

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar has appealed to residents of various colonies and areas in the city to come together in the form of associations to cooperate with the corporation in carrying out development activities.

He suggested on Saturday that an association could be formed for a cluster of 150 to 200 families or two to three roads each. The associations so formed could have periodical meetings to supervise the state of affairs pertaining to sanitation, street lighting, water supply, public health and such other issues in their localities.

Pointing to absence of good sanitary conditions as one of the major reasons for outbreak of various diseases, Mr. Gulzar said that the corporation as part of its silver jubilee celebrations had decided to ensure that garbage was not dumped on roads. Roads were meant for travel and dumping of garbage on roads would not only present an ugly picture but also result in outbreak of diseases, he said.

The Commissioner ordered removal of VMC's public health wing worker Karnati Gopala Rao from his present duties when residents of third sanitary division complained to him during his inspection that the worker was not performing his duties satisfactorily.

Inspection

Mr. Gulzar visited several areas in One Town, including Gupta Centre, Andamani Brahmayya Street, Pedda Mastan Street, Housing Board Colony and Urmila Nagar during inspection.

Expressing dissatisfaction over sanitation in these areas, the Commissioner asked public health wing personnel to see to it that the silt taken out from the side drains was not left dumped at the bins and cleared.
