Train services likely

to be affected

Thiruvananthapuram: Train services are likely to be affected on June 26 owing to the "rail roko" agitation by the DYFI to protest against the hike in the price of petrol and diesel. A release from the Southern Railway has urged the passengers to schedule their travel plan, as the services are likely to be affected. Every effort will be taken by the railway to maintain normal train services, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Youth Congress leader demands probe

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All India Youth Congress secretary Deepthi Mary Varghese has demanded an inquiry into the alleged police high-handedness against its activists during an Assembly march conducted by the party on Monday. She said the Home Department was yet to take action against those policemen responsible for assaulting her during the march. Moreover, the assault occurred in the absence of policewomen, she alleged. Ms. Varghese criticised the various women's organisations for maintaining silence over the incident. Ms. Varghese has requested the State Human Rights Commission to take action against those policemen who were responsible for the attack on the youth congress activists. — Staff Reporter

Water supply

to be disrupted

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The supply of drinking water to Vattiyoorkavu, PTP Nagar, Thirumala, Poojappura, Karamana and Kalady will be partially disrupted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 26 to facilitate repair work on the Kerala Water Authority's reservoir servicing the PTP Nagar division. People in these areas are requested to take precautionary measures, a press note issued here on Saturday said. — Staff Reporter

Five rescued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Five persons, Ajinson, 31, Sundar, 35, Bjiresh, 35, Sham Densly, 28 and Pravin, 31, from Nagarcoil, whose car got trapped between rocks at the Sea Rock beach at Kovalam were rescued by the police and a group of fishermen on Saturday night. According to the police, the five person had come to Kovalam at about 9 p.m. and drove right down to the beach where the vehicle got caught in the waves and got lodged in some rocks out at sea. After about two hours local fishermen managed to pull the car back to the beach. — Staff Reporter

`Abandon move to impose cess on rubber'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Marxist Party (CMP) leader G. Sugunan has asked the Government to abandon the move to impose an annual cess of Rs.100 an acre on rubber cultivation. In a statement here on Saturday Mr. Sugunan, described the measure as anti-farmer. — Special Correspondent
