Man sets estranged girlfriend on fire

New Delhi: A man was on Saturday arrested on charges of setting afire his estranged girlfriend in an East Delhi locality, police said. Rishi, a resident of Jagatpuri in Preet Vihar, was arrested after Rajni accused him of setting her on fire last evening. According to police, Rishi had been threatening 25-year- old Rajni since she broke up with him a year ago. Yesterday, Rishi came to her house in Vishnu Garden locality in the evening and had a fight with her. Following this, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. Rajni was admitted with 70 per cent burn injuries to Safdarjung Hospital. Rishi, however, claimed she had tried to commit suicide, police said.

Robbery case solved

New Delhi: Police on Saturday claimed to have resolved a case of attempted robbery in the house of senior citizens in South Delhi within 24 hours with the arrest of three people. Laxman Chaudhary (36), Shambhu Pandey (23) and Vighan Tiwari (19) were arrested yesterday evening from Sangam Vihar. Police said Chaudhary, working as domestic help in Lt Gen (Retd.) Jitender Sood's Defence Colony residence, was missing since Mrs Sood was attacked by two people in the house during wee hours on Friday. The Soods had suspected Chaudhary's role in the incident. The other accused had also worked as domestic help in the same house earlier.

DYFI plans `chakka jam'

NEW DELHI: Intensifying its agitation in protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities and fuel, the Central Executive Committee of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has called for a 10-minute "chakka jam" across the country on July 7. The DYFI took the decision after discussing and reviewing the situation at its two-day meeting here earlier this week.

Expressing serious concern over "the indifferent attitude of the United Progressive Alliance Government towards the price rise issue", DYFI said the all-round rise in prices of essential commodities like wheat, pulses and vegetables had hit the common man hard.

The recent increase in petrol and diesel prices had only aggravated matters as it was the seventh time in the past two years that fuel prices have increased, DYFI noted.

One injured in fire

NEW DELHI: A minor fire broke out at a printing press in Anand Parbat here on Saturday morning. One person sustained burns.

According to a Delhi Fire Service spokesperson, the fire broke out around 10 a.m. in the printing press on Faridpur Road and over a dozen tenders were pressed into service to put out the blaze. The cause of the fire was not known.

Van catches fire

NEW DELHI: A Maruti van caught fire on the flyover near the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Saturday afternoon. Two persons travelling in the van managed to escape unhurt.

The fire was apparently caused due to a short circuit in the electrical system. One fire tender was rushed to the spot to put out the blaze, fire brigade sources said.

Auto-lifter held

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of an alleged auto-lifter at Dilshad Colony in East Delhi on Friday, the police claim to have worked out three cases of motor vehicle thefts.

Acting on a tip-off that two young men would come on a stolen motorcycle, a police team laid a trap at T-point Tahirpur in Dilshad Colony. As soon as the two men appeared on the scene, the police waved them to stop. While one of them managed to escape, the other identified as Ranjit Singh was arrested.
