Guwahati: Oil India Limited (OIL) has decided to hire a Kazakhstan-based company to conduct a seismic survey on Brahmaputra riverbed in Assam for hydrocarbon this winter. OIL Chairman and Managing Director M.R. Pasrija told reporters here on Friday the survey will begin in November this year. A senior official of the company said the Kazakhstan-based company, which would be conducting two-dimensional seismic survey on the riverbed, has the expertise of conducting similar surveys on the Volga riverbed and the Caspian Sea. The company is expected to move its equipment to Assam sometime in November and the actual survey work will commence in December which would be carried out for two consecutive winter seasons, said the company's Director (Exploration) S.K. Patro. The oil company is hopeful that following discoveries of good reserves of hydrocarbon at Khagorijan, Baghjan and Chandmari oil fields on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra, this survey would lead to discovery of good reserves of hydrocarbon under the riverbed. The survey area will stretch from Majuli river island in Assam to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh along the river.
