Scientist dead

Kolkata: Eminent nuclear scientist and former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University B. D. Nag Chowdhury died of cerebral attack at his residence here on Sunday.

Mr. Chowdhury (89), is survived by his wife and son Dipankar Nag Chowdhury.

His wife Dipali, a famous classical vocalist, said that Mr. Chowdhury died at 3.00 a.m. on Sunday and was cremated. Born in 1917, Mr. Chowdhury studied in Benaras Hindu University, Allahabad University and got his Ph.D from the University of California.

Mr. Chowdhury worked under Meghnad Saha, the legendary nuclear physicist and did research on various subjects and taught at a number of renowned institutes and universities worldwide. He was the Vice-Chancellor of JNU at Delhi from 1974-78.

A Padma Vibhusan awardee, the scientist wrote several books. — PTI
