This Day That Age
The Ceylon Prime Minister, Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, who arrived in London on June 24 to attend the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference, told reporters that it was the intention of his Government to alter the Constitution and declare Ceylon a Republic and it was also their intention that Ceylon should remain in the Commonwealth. "I do not see why we should not remain in the Commonwealth while preserving our sovereignty and helping each other in the cause of world peace and friendship," he said. Asked when he expected Ceylon to become a Republic, Mr. Bandaranaike said, "Certainly not within a year, perhaps two."
