This Day That Age
A collection of Ragamalikas, composed by Sangitha Sastra Visarada K. Vasudevachar of Mysore and published by the Kalakshetra, entitled Nava Rathna Ragamalika, was released at a function got up at the Kalakshetra in Adyar, Madras, on June 24 to celebrate the 92nd birthday of the veteran musician-composer. Mr. T.L. Venkatarama Aiyar, Judge of the Supreme Court, presided. Musicians and music-lovers, who had gathered at the meeting, offered their felicitations to Sri Vasudevachar and paid tributes to his attainments. Smt. Rukmini Devi, welcoming the gathering, described Sri Vasudevachar as a veteran artiste and a scholar and said they were really fortunate to have him in their midst. On behalf of the staff and students of Kalakshetra, Mr. K.S. Ramaswami Sastri presented an address of felicitation in Sanskrit to Sri Vasudevachar. Mr. Venkatarama Aiyar said Sri Vasudevachar was very well conversant both with sangeeta and sahitya. He was a great scholar in Sanskrit and was a sampradaya vidwan as could be seen from the way he rendered the raga alapana. Such great scholars, he said, constituted the cultural wealth of the country.
