RAINING IMAGES: Aneesh Parappanangadi with his paintings on rain. Photo: S. Ramesh Kurup
Rain evokes varied moods in different people. Usually, artists give it an aesthetic appeal. Many have expressed the soothing effect rain has on them. Aneesh Parappanangadi, an up-and-coming painter, has come up with a solo exhibition based on the theme rain at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery. He has titled the 29 pieces, mostly in watercolour, "Mazha." With the revival of the southwest monsoon, the timing of the show could not have been better. Many of the works are realistic, on rustic life in and around his village near Parappanangadi in Malappuram district. Paddy fields are a recurring element in some of the works. Two paintings are done in acrylic and another in mixed medium. Lines and colours are blended harmoniously in many of the works of Aneesh. Life on the beach and riverbank is another significant leitmotif in these paintings. An autorickshaw stand, ship sailing in the rough seas, people walking in the rain, village scenes during the monsoon and common street visuals are some of works exhibited. Aneesh has also put on show a few other paintings to give new meanings to rain and its relation to different seasons. Among the works are a Kashmiri paddling a Shikara on Dal Lake, camels in the Thar Desert and tourists enjoying the snowfall in Shimla. "Life outside rain also inspired me. But they are also related one way or the other," Aneesh said. The work on a solitary woman reaper of Nepal is an added attraction. The exhibition will conclude on Thursday.
