Thiruvananthapuram: They had fared well at the entrance examination, but their faces were writ large with anxiety. Selecting the right course had been proving difficult for these students and their parents. To get a clear picture of the courses and the institutions offering them, they came for the Pre-counselling Guidance Programme for professional courses, organised by The Hindu-Educationplus, here on Sunday.

Well before the event began, students and parents lined up at the AKG Memorial Hall to take their seats. A handbook distributed to the participants gave them a clear idea about the institutions and courses in medicine, engineering and agriculture streams in the State.

Students and parents were seen involved in hectic consultations about the institutions, courses, careers and also the Bill to regulate self-financing colleges, piloted by Minister for Education M.A. Baby in the Assembly on Friday.

Commissioner for Entrance Examinations B.S. Mavoji was the first among the panellists to reach the venue. Soon, he was followed by Joint Commissioner for Entrance Examination Rajoo Krishnan; course coordinator of Triumphant Institute of Management Education (T.I.M.E.) Ajay Antony; Superintendent of Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, D. Dalus; Principal of Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, K. Jyothindra Kumar; and the former Director of Research, Kerala Agricultural University, C.K. Peethambaran.

The students and parents listened in rapt attention to the presentations made by the panellists, who spoke about the features of various courses and the job opportunities in the engineering, medicine and agriculture streams.

Insights on new areas such as bioinformatics, e-Animal Husbandry, e-fisheries, leisure management and adventure tourism generated interest among the students.

Mr. Antony, who listed out the conventional, specialised and new-generation courses in the engineering stream, said, "Most of the happenings are in the information, communication and entertainment (ICE) industry."

Although the panellists threw questions at the participants, the students preferred to listen rather than answer.

A question-and-answer session towards the end of the five-hour programme, the last of three such guidance programmes in the State, saw the students and parents raising doubts to the panellists, who answered them with patience.
