CPI demands implementation of Avanashi-Athikadavu scheme

Staff Reporter

This will benefit over 30 lakh population in Erode and Coimbatore

Over 200 tanks will get water The scheme received sanction in 1996-2001 DMK regime `Till date nothing has been done'

ERODE: The long-pending Avanashi-Athikadavu scheme should be implemented for which the DMK Government should allot funds in the 2006-2007 budget, said the Erode unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) at its executive meeting here on Saturday.

The meeting, presided by secretary N. Periyasamy, said if implemented the scheme would benefit more than 30 lakh population in Erode and Coimbatore districts. Further 200 and odd tanks and ponds would get water. The scheme was sanctioned during the 1996-2001 DMK regime, but till date nothing was done. Hence the meeting urged the DMK Government to sanction funds for the scheme in the budget. The meeting also expressed concern over the growing road and drainage problems in the municipal and panchayat areas. Many roads were in disrepair and drainages had to be constructed in a number of places.

Though the local bodies had passed resolutions for the construction of the drainages and repairing the roads, the contractors could not undertake the works because of the increase in the prices of construction materials. The meeting appealed to the Government to hold talks with the contractors and settle the issue.

The meeting thanked the Government for the various concessions granted for handloom weavers in the cooperative sector. Such concessions should be given to private handloom weavers too, it demanded.
