GUNTUR : A new pesticide that can effectively fight thrips, aphid, whitefly, jassids and other pest attacks in crops, under the brand name `Lancer Gold' was launched by the Mumbai-based United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) here on Sunday. UPL General Manager P.Suresh Reddy said that this was their first-of-its-kind product available anywhere in the world. Attacks of newer varieties of pests have been reported from Bt Cotton fields across the country. "This product will be effective against all types of known pests attacking cotton plants," he said. There was a misconception among the farming community that using Bt cotton seeds means not using any pesticide. Newer varieties of pest attacks were reported from different places in south India. Pink bollworm which was earlier confined to regions near Punjab and Pakistan was now being observed in south India too, he said. He also launched two other new products `Spolit', an agrochemical that can be used against various pests attacking chilli, cotton and other pulse crops and `Sweep', a non-selective herbicide mainly used for land clearance. "UPL is committed to offering the farmer the best products to improve his productivity," Mr. Reddy said.
