Four lorry loads of coconut shells seized

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Kangeyam Tahsildar Prasanna on Saturday seized four lorry loads of coconut shells that were taken for burning to produce carbon.

Two days ago, Kangeyam MLA Vidiyal S. Sekar raised the issue of burning coconut shells at the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting in which the Union Ministers E.V.K.S. Elangovan and Ms Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan reviewed the Centre-sponsored schemes.

Action sought

Mr. Sekar said that Kangeyam was noted for coconut oil crushing. Farmers used to remove the shells and sell the copra. Many purchased the shells to produce carbon by burning them.

When the shells were burned, a thick black smoke emanated polluting the villages. He urged the Collector to take stringent action against those indulged in burning shells.

Meanwhile, the residents of Dharapuram urged the Collector and the Pollution Control Board to instruct the rice mills in Dharapuram area to install chimneys. The public complained that the smoke from the rice mills created health problems to them.
