ERODE: Doctors, nursing homes and corporate hospitals should provide free treatment to the poor and tribals, said Collector D. Karthikeyan here on Sunday. Inaugurating an Endo Nasal Live Surgical Workshop organised by the Erode ENT Surgeons Trust, Erode Branch Association of Otolaryngologists, Indian Medical Association and Annai ENT Head and Neck care Centre, he said that as competitions were increasing in the medical field, ensuring quality alone would help doctors and hospitals. He said in some places there were complaints against doctors being lethargic in treating patients. But in Erode, he had not received any such complaints. He commended the doctors for their service. The Collector appealed to the doctors to render healthcare for the people living in interior forests and remote villages. Veteran ENT surgeon, Mohan Kameswaran, who was conferred with `Padma Shree' recently, said that the Union Government was involving private hospitals in various Government schemes. He said soon the National Deafness Programme would be launched in India for which the Centre had planned to involve the private hospitals.
Free camps
Secretary of the Erode ENT Surgeons Trust C.N. Raja said that in association with the MYRADA, a Non-Governmental Organisation, the Trust was conducting periodical free ENT camps in tribal areas, mainly at Arepalayam in Thalawady hills. He said so far they had screened 1,000 tribal people and performed 150 free surgeries in Erode for various ENT problems. Ten persons were provided with free hearing aids. Dr. K. Banumathi, Dr. S. Chenniappan and Dr. C. Thangavel spoke. A live demo was conducted on some Endo Nasal surgeries. Nearly 75 ENT surgeons from all over Tamil Nadu participated in the workshop.
