Letters to the Editor
The moving article "Rajiv Gandhi an appreciation" by V.R. Krishna Iyer (June 24) reminded me of my brief interaction with the Prime Minister when the document Challenge to Education was released in 1985. I questioned the statement in the document repeated by Rajiv that teachers needed community watch. He said: "I'll give you a free pass. You can visit any village in Bihar and if you find a teacher in a school, inform me. I'll come and honour the teacher." I responded saying that was not so in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Iyer is right in saying that but for the coterie around him, Rajiv would have been a great Prime Minister.
