Special Correspondent
Pondicherry : Members of civic bodies should function in an apolitical manner, said Panchayat Movement president V.A. Vasudevaraju here on Sunday. Stating that civic elections were being held after 38 years, he said it was a "historic opportunity" to elect 1,184 members for the five municipalities, 10 commune panchayats and 98 village panchayats across the Union Territory. Mr. Vasudevaraju expressed concern over the attitude of the political parties to grab power to strengthen their base, instead of educating and enlightening the public on the role and responsibility of local governance. He recalled how the French gave importance to the municipal bodies in the Union Territory. He appealed to voters to elect service- minded and people-friendly candidates.
