Pondicherry
Special Correspondent
Pondicherry: The difficulty at present faced by the students of Pondicherry intending to do courses in medicine or engineering in privately managed professional colleges has come to cause concern to the Members of Parliament from Pondicherry. The AICC general secretary and Rajya Sabha Member V. Narayanasamy has said that there should be no delay on the part of the administration to direct the private managements to earmark fifty per cent of the total sanctioned strength in each of the privately run professional courses for the students of the Union Territory. The Lok Sabha Member and PMK Parliamentary party leader M. Ramadoss has called upon the administration to promulgate an ordinance to bring to an end the woes and sufferings of the students. Mr. Ramadoss said in a statement that the Government should also probe into the claims of some colleges that they came under minority status. He said that a minority-run institution should admit students of the minority community from within Pondicherry and after exhausting the admission for such students the remaining seats should be placed at the disposal of the Government to be filled by candidates selected through joint entrance testHe referred to the violation of the objectives of letting private players to set up their institutions here. Mr. Ramadoss said that he was pained to see that students were facing every year the necessity to resort to agitations due to the unclear policy of the government on quota of seats for government sponsored candidates. Mr. Narayanasamy wanted steps to measure up to the demand of the students of Karaikal for a just and fair allocation of seats in higher educational institutions.
