The children had gone to immerse idols as part of ritual

GULBARGA: Three children were drowned in the slushy waters of the Sharanabasaveshwar Tank in the city when they went to immerse the idols of the cattle that were worshiped as part of the "Mannu Ethina Amavasya" celebrations on Sunday.

The police identified the victims as Mallinath (9), Akash Jamde (12) and Srikant M Pujari (14), all students of the Shyamsunder School in the Jagat Area and were residents of the same locality near the Mailarlinga Temple.

According to the police, six children, including the victims, had gone to the tank where the cleaning work was in progress, to immerse the idols of the cattle.

While the victims got into the water, the other three were on the banks.

Three of the surviving children told the police that one after another all three of their friends went inside the water and never came up.

Panic-stricken boys rushed back to their house and informed the parents about the drowning.

The parents of the victims, who rushed to the spot, fished out the body caught in the slush and shifted them to the Government General Hospital in the city where they were pronounced as brought dead.

Senior police officials, who rushed to the general hospital immediately after the incident, said the spot where the children were drowned had about six-foot water and the ground was slushy.
