Preetham held to a draw

KOCHI: The former youth National champion Preetham R. Sharma, the second seed from Tamil Nadu, was forced to a draw by his Statemate Venkat Sundaram in the third round of the 18th Cusat Open all-India Fide-rating chess tournament at the Cochin University's SMS Hall here on Sunday.

Gujarat's Gopal Shah surprised Tamil Nadu's ninth-seeded P. Phoobalan in the second round.

The results (third round): K. Ratnakaran (3) bt Rahul M. Ved (2), Venkat Sundaram (2.5) drew with Preetham R. Sharma (2.5), B.T. Muralikrishna (3) bt Soham Das (2), Vijaya Sarathy (2) lost to M.B. Muraleedharan (3), N. Sudhakar Babu (3) bt M.P. Ajith (2), R. Muralidharan (2) lost to Syed Anwar Shazuli (3), O.T. Anilkumar (3) bt K.R. Madhusoodhanan (2), K. Narayanan (2.5) drew with Aswin Jayaram (2.5), V. Haribalu (2) lost to Swapnil S. Dhopade (3), Suman Basu (2) bt Vinoth Kumar (2), G.S. Sreejith (2) lost to T.J. Suresh Kumar (3), C. Praveen Kumar (2.5) drew with K. Ganesan (2.5), P. Nikil Shyam (3) bt Merryston David (2), T.S. Nandakumar (2.5) drew with K. Haridas (2.5).
