NELLORE: Denizens of Kavali town has something to cheer about. They can now dial the toll free number108 either from a landline or from a mobile phone for immediate medical attention or help during any emergency. When a person calls108, an Advanced Life Saving (ALS) ambulance, equipped with state-of-the-art medical communication and extrication equipment, will immediately be rushed to the spot with paramedics. And it will then shift the patient to the nearest hospital. The Emergency Management Research Institute (EMRI), which had launched its dial 108 emergency response service on Saturday night, would, however, not charge anything for its services, EMRI Chief Executive Officer Venkat Changavalli told reporters. "The emergencies could be a road accident, electrocution, injuries due to burns, industrial accidents, drowning, food poisoning, animal bites, water contamination and any other cases such as a woman suffering labour pains or a person suffering a stroke. We attend to all kinds of emergencies, which require immediate hospitalisation," he said. The EMRI had earlier launched its dial 108 service in Nellore in the third week of March. The emergency service is available in 49 cities and towns in the State including Kavali.
