BHUBANESWAR: Leaders of various Central trade unions on Sunday decided to call a strike on June 30 to register their protest against the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's decision to disinvest 10 per cent of government shares in the National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco). The decision was taken at a State-level convention organised by Central trade unions, which was also attended by representatives of various political parties, barring the Congress. However representatives of the Congress-supported Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) attended the meeting. A resolution in respect of the proposed 12-hour strike by holding demonstrations outside Central government offices and establishments was unanimously passed in the meeting that was presided over by Shivaji Patnaik, former Lok Sabha MP and veteran trade union leader. Leaders of various employees' unions also participated. The strike will cover Central government establishments such as Post and Telegraph and Income Tax offices, Railways and Centre-owned public sector undertakings, including Nalco. Terming the Centre's decision anti-people, they called upon the people to oppose the disinvestment. If the decision was not reconsidered after the June 30 strike, an all-party delegation will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In the third phase, the trade unions will call for an Orissa bandh, the meeting decided.
