ERODE: The unrest in Sri Lanka has hit the export of bedspreads from Chennimalai. For the past five years, "denim" variety bedspreads are produced and exported to Sri Lanka from Chennimalai. Every month, 600 bales of bedspreads , worth Rs. 35 lakh, are exported. During the winter, the weavers get extra orders. In January and February this year, the weavers exported bedspreads worth Rs. 1 crore. In April and May, export orders were low, but Rs. 30 lakh worth of bedspreads were exported. But for the past 15 days, no export is possible. Goods are getting accumulated in the warehouse. The manufacturers say that owing to the reduction in the production of export varieties, they incur a heavy loss, as they have to pay wages to the weavers even for their rest period. Some merchants from Erode are exporting the bedspreads to Sri Lanka. They have also been left in the lurch.
