Visakhapatnam
Telephone directory Visakhapatnam District Telephone Directory was last published in 2001 and the subscribers are denied an updated version although several lakhs of connections have been added subsequently. We occasionally hear the officials claiming that the directory is ready. The subscribers are paying even service tax for phone use. It is the responsibility of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) to supply each of the subscribers the latest telephone directory without delay. S. Ramachandra Rao, Visakhapatnam One-way curbs Pithapuram Colony abutting the National Highway no. 5 has a population of about 50,000 but due to one-way restrictions and road divider, the residents of the colony are forced to take a longer, circuitous route while entering and coming out of the colony. This prompts many of them to enter from the wrong side at the Maddilapalem junction, which is dangerous and leading to many accidents. I have addressed several letters to all the authorities and wonder what is stopping them from finding a remedy. G.M. Rama Rao, Visakhapatnam Defective signals The signal lights at most of the important junctions in Visakhapatnam city are either defective or malfunctioning. In the absence of the police, vehicle drivers are facing severe inconvenience and utter chaos prevails during peak hours. Of late, pedestrians crossing the roads are getting increasingly involved in accidents at these junctions in the absence of signal boards. I request the Commissioner of Police to depute officials to conduct a drive for phase-wise rectification of all defective signals and duly restoring pedestrian signals. G. S. Siddhartha, Visakhapatnam Sorry state of parks There are umpteen number of parks in almost all localities as per the city's master plan. Some are well developed and maintained by the local welfare associations. But who are responsible for the bad ones? Have the residents around them taken any initiative to form welfare associations and sought Government's assistance? Government can make a start but what will happen later? The residents should come forward to maintain the parks instead of converting them into garbage dumping yards. K. Nehru Patnaik, Visakhapatnam Control viral fevers Gudlavanipalem and Endada villages were in the composite gram panchayat till 1994 but the new boundaries are not drawn after they were separated. Another issue is poor sanitation due to which most of the people are suffering from viral fever in these areas. I appeal to the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation's Commissioner to send medical teams to these places immediately. There are no primary health centres and there is need for a mobile hospital there. Also, potable water should be supplied and sanitation should be improved by sanctioning underground drainage scheme, which the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority promised to these villages way back in 1992. Bheri Suribabu, Visakhapatnam The `super' shock We were shocked to read in The Hindu on Saturday that the Gouthami Express would become a super fast express train from July 1 and passengers boarding the train at Kakinada port city station should board the train at Town railway station. At the outset, I would like to ask the Railway authorities how an express train, which stops at many stations between Kakinada and Vijayawada be described as super fast express. It is only to fleece the travelling public that Gouthami Express has been converted into super fast train. Adding insult to injury, the passengers boarding the train at Port station have to go to Town railway station which is serious inconvenience to the people living in the southern side of Kakinada. It is unfortunate that our MPs are tight-lipped on the issue. We strongly disapprove the move and may resort to legal action if the railway authorities go ahead and act on their whims and fancies. S.S. Krishnaji, Kakinada
