CHENNAI: Even as medical examination of People's Democratic Party leader A.N. Maudhany continues in the Coimbatore Central Prison, a decision on where he should undergo treatment may depend more on what the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch CID has to say in the matter. The Government is likely to take a decision in the next few days, after considering the reports of the medical team, the SIT and jail officials, police sources say.
Security aspect
A major factor will be security, given the sensitive nature of the serial bomb blasts case in connection with which Mr. Maudhany was arrested on March 31, 1998. The trial pending before a special court in Coimbatore where his presence may be required has to be considered. Legal issues have to be given serious thought to, considering the past developments. Hence the government has to look into the views of the SIT, which charge sheeted the accused and those of the prison and the local police authorities. Apart from the safety and security, the authorities have to pay attention to the public angle from all aspects vis-à-vis the place of lodging the accused.
