Commits suicide

Nagercoil : A mentally retarded girl committed suicide by setting her ablaze in her house on Saturday.

According to sources, Rejini (25), daughter of Sivalingam of Puthalam near Suchindrum, took this extreme step when her parents were away from home.

The police have registered a case.

Five vans seized

Nagercoil : The police seized five vans for having transported passengers on Sunday.

According to sources, as directed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Thuckalay), Sundaravadivelu, who received a number of complaints in this regard, a police team seized the vans. The police have registered a case.

Cycle stolen

Tuticorin : The police on Sunday arrested one Vijay (22) on a charge of stealing a cycle at Kovilpatti on Saturday.

Teams from foreign varsities coming

CHENNAI: Representatives of three foreign universities will be in Chennai over the next couple of weeks to counsel students. Representative of University of Wales, Swansea (business school), Ian Thomas will be available on Monday from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m., Paul Rees of the same university (engineering courses) will be here on July 5 from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m.

Mike Wade of Staffordshire University will meet students on July 12 from 2 to 5 p.m. and Simon Philip of James Cook University will be here on July 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Staff Reporter

NLC unions plan strike from July 4

CUDDALORE: Opposing the Centre's move to divest 10 per cent stake in Neyveli Lignite Corporation, trade unions have planned demonstrations from June 27. They have decided to go on an indefinite strike from 10 p.m. on July 4, says Labour Progressive Front secretary S. Rajavanniyan. Trade unions, including the CITU, LLF, PTS, HMS, AITUC and the Anna Thozhilalar Oozhiyar Sangham agreed to join the strike. On June 27, the employees would wear black badges and "demand cards" urging the Centre to drop the move. On June 28 and 29, they would hold gate meetings and on June 30 at the entrance of mines and thermal stations. On July 1, they would launch street-corner meetings at Neyveli, and on July 3 observe a hunger strike. From July 4, the employees would not turn up for duty. — Special Correspondent

Four held for boy's death

CUDDALORE: The police have arrested a soothsayer of Sethiathope, and three others in connection with the death of a seven-year-old boy S. Sathish Kumar at Arasadikuppam, near Nellikuppam here last month. Rajavelu (65), a farmer, his wife Vasantha and their son R. Krishnaraj were also arrested. The police said on May 13 the victim's father Sakthivel filed a police complaint that his son was missing. The next day the boy was found dead on the outskirts. Police found out that Rajavelu's family was beset with problems: it could not solemnise the marriage of five sons and could not complete the construction of house. When they consulted the soothsayer he suggested to the family to sacrifice a first-born male child. The family members allegedly strangulated Sathish Kumar who used to come to their house to watch television. — Special Correspondent

Container terminal operations

CHENNAI: Chennai Container Terminal management (CCT) on Sunday made it clear that it was ready to permit striking employees who wished to return to work. It said it was gearing up to meet the requirements of the terminal users and ensure higher productivity. The CCT had implemented the recommendations of Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central) who held talks with a section of striking staff on Saturday. The recommendations related to actions to be taken by the CCT to facilitate the employees to return to work, a release said. At present, four vessels were working and two were expected to be berthed on Sunday night. "The Consortium of Chennai Feeder Operators has imposed a `Chennai Immediate Surcharge' of $ 30 per TEU. The CCT expects to berth the vessels on arrival by June 27." — Special Correspondent

Survey of wasteland

PERAMBALUR: A block-wise survey for ascertaining the nature of wastelands is being conducted in the district. A report will be sent to the State Government once the survey is completed for implementation of the free land scheme for the landless, the District Collector, Anil Meshram said in a press release issued here on Sunday. He said ten committees were compiling data such as extent of wasteland available in the respective block, the nature of soil, etc.

Highways inspected

PERAMBALUR: The District Collector, Anil Meshram, inspected several accident-prone areas on the Perambalur - Tiruchi and the Perambalur - Thozhudhur sectors on the National Highway. He discussed with officials steps to be taken to set up warning boards and other precautionary measures to avert accidents. The Superintendent of Police, Prem Anand Sinha, was among those were present.

Stalin's visit

NAGAPATTINAM: Security has been beefed up for Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin's visit here on Monday. Offcial sources said that Mr Stalin would inspect some rural development and tsunami rehabilitation works in Nagapattinam.Mr Stalin would review with the Collector and other district officials on the progress of various development works being carried out in the district.He would address a public meeting at Avuri Thidal in the evening to be presided by A.K.S.Vijayan, MP.

Robbers arrested

NAGAPATTINAM: A police team arrested three youths Murugan (30) of Nagore Pallpannaicherry, Vinod (19) of Keezha Maappadugai in Mayiladuturai and Thambidurai (28) of Mannipallam in connection with the robbery of Rs.9.15 lakh at Sirkazhi last month. The police recovered Rs.2.90 lakh from them who had robbed Rs.9.15 lakh from Duraisamy (52) who was working in the diesel bunk run by theTamil Nadu Fisheries Department, on May 31, police said.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 105.86 feet on Sunday.

The inflow was 3,777 cusecs and the outflow 12,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

ERODE: The police on Sunday arrested four persons on charges of murdering a farmer. According to the police, Kuppanna Gounder (78) of Malaiyadipudur, Sathyamangalam, purchased a land from his neighbour Kumarasamy a few months ago. The latter wanted the land back as some persons sought it for a higher amount. As Kuppanna Gounder refused to sell it, Kumarasamy and four others assaulted him with deadly weapons on Saturday. Kuppanna Gounder was admitted to the Sathyamangalam Government Hospital where he died. The Sathyamangalam police arrested four persons including Kumarasamy. Further investigation is on. - Staff Reporter

Workshop held

ATTUR: The All India Crop Biotechnology Association and Rasi Seeds organised a one-day workshop here recently to create awareness among farmers on crop biotechnology. The workshop focussed on dispelling misconceptions on crop biotechnology, and highlighted the benefits of transgenic technology, a release said. Association president M. Ramasami said the use of transgenic technology had led to a number of benefits, including better yield, minimum cost of cultivation and increased profitability. - Staff Reporter
