Mahila Congress to launch scheme for women's empowerment

Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: Manjula Naidu, All India General Secretary of the Mahila Congress, has said that the organisation plans to launch a scheme for helping women become economically independent.

At a press conference here on Saturday, Ms. Naidu said the empowerment scheme was being planned along the lines of the Kudumbasree programme in Kerala. The details of the scheme are being chalked out, she said. She said the empowerment of women was essential for effecting social change.

The Congress party has now begun to give priority to the empowerment of women.

Women denied seats

Mahila Congress State president Shanimol Usman who was present at the meet attributed one of the reasons for the defeat of the Congress in the last Assembly elections to the inadequate representation of women candidates.

Ms. Usman sought a reinvestigation into the Kiliroor sex scandal case to bring to light the name of the `VIP' who was allegedly involved in it.
