Conference of only Congress workers called in Belgaum

Staff Correspondent

No party leader is going to be invited for the conference to be held on August 5

Belgaum: In what appears to be a rebellion of sorts, a section of Congress activists has decided to hold a State-level conference exclusively for party workers.

None of the party leaders would be invited for the conference to be held here on August 5, announced a group of Congress workers led by Shankar Munavalli, president, SC/ST Cell, District Congress Committee, Belgaum, here on Sunday.

He said posters and banners with photographs of only the former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and AICC president Sonia Gandhi would be put up in the city.

He criticised the election officers for not holding organisational polls in a democratic way. Elections to KPCC and AICC were scheduled in March 2005. So far neither the presidents of block committees nor the district committees had been elected. Even the list of KPCC members was yet to be declared.

He regretted the "indifferent" attitude of KPCC president M. Mallikarjun Kharge and former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh towards workers. None of the two leaders was prepared to listen to the grievances of the workers, which had made them disillusioned. The same was the case with A.K. Antony, AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka, who insisted that workers visit New Delhi to air their grievances, which was not affordable for all workers.

Also, there was no recognition for loyal workers under the present leadership of the party in the State. Instead of rehabilitating Motamma and K.C. Kondaiah, the party should have found new faces to boost the confidence of workers, he said.

To a question, Mr. Munvalli said he was prepared to face any action if the party construed his move as rebellion or an act of indiscipline.
