Bangalore: The well-known Kannada poet K.S. Nisar Ahmed was on Sunday honoured with the prestigious Masti Venkatesh Iyengar Award in recognition of his contribution to the enrichment of Kannada literature. The award was presented by the nonagenarian lexicographer and scholar G. Venkatasubbaiah at a well-attended function got up by the Masti Venkatesh Iyengar Award Committee. Noted poet H.S. Venkatesh Murthy described Prof. Nisar Ahmed as a people's poet and a representative of the common man. Mavinkere Ranganath of the award committee spoke of the contribution of Prof. Nisar Ahmed and he likened his poetry to that of the late K.S. Narasimhaswamy. The Masti award has been named after the Jnanpith Award winning Kannada literary giant Masti Venkatesh Iyengar. The award comprises a purse of Rs. 25,000. Prof. Nisar Ahmed is the 15th recipient of the award which was instituted in 1993. The previous award winners were Yeshwant Chittal, U.R. Ananthamurthy, K.S. Narasimha Swamy, S.L. Bhyrappa, Girish Karnad and Chandrashekar Kambar (they had shared the award), Ha. Ma. Nayak, A.N. Murthy Rao, G.S. Shivarudrappa, M. Chidananda Murthy, L.S. Seshagiri Rao, D. Javare Gowda, Vyasaraya Ballal and Prof. Venkatasubbaiah.
