SNDP Yogam for job quota in private sector

Alappuzha: The Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, on Sunday, demanded job reservations for depressed castes in the private sector.

The Yogam criticised the anti-reservation protests held in New Delhi and elsewhere against the proposed reservation of seats in higher educational institutions for the backward classes.

`Legitimate right'

Talking to presspersons, after attending the general body meeting of the Yogam at Cherthala, near here, Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said the reservations for backward castes were not a question of charity or generosity, but a legitimate right of the backward castes, oppressed by centuries of discrimination.

Mr. Natesan said the meeting, by another resolution, had welcomed the State Government's demand that identification of minority communities be left to the States.

Reacting to remarks made by Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker on Saturday that the issue of a tie-up with the Yogam was a closed chapter, Mr. Natesan said the NSS was angry with the Yogam as the latter did not support its demand that only Brahmins be made priests. — UNI
