The State Government received a letter from UNESCO recently making the offer. UNESCO's proposal is that it can undertake content development activities for Akshaya to support the cause of social and cultural empowerment of women in Kerala. The contents proposed to be developed relate to legal guidance, career guidance, Government schemes, health and welfare of mothers and children. Select Akshaya centres will receive aid, which includes research and training. UNESCO also proposes income generation activities for women's groups under the Akshaya centres in the second phase of its programme. First, UNESCO will undertake the pilot project in Kannur. About 20 Akshaya centres would be selected under the pilot project to receive support for capacity-building exercises. The UNDP, the University of Adelaide and Queensland University of Technology will also participate in the venture. UNESCO had conducted a consultation on the theme `Innovating I.C.T Applications for Poverty Reduction' in Delhi recently. Kerala's Akshaya project was invited to the programme. Women empowerment was a core theme of the deliberations at the meeting. T.K. Manzoor, State coordinator of Akshaya, had presented a paper on Akshaya at the consultation meeting.
