"Reaching the most un-reached''

NEW DELHI: Outgoing Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) H.P. Dikshit said on Sunday that the University had created an outreach to the most marginalised and backward regions of the country through its network of centres. He said IGNOU was committed to "bridge the gap to the last mile in reaching the most un-reached''.

"New emerging fields including actuarial sciences, insurance education, media studies and gender studies are the prospective areas of growth that the University of the calibre of IGNOU should contribute to.''

"India has the largest number of visually impaired people. Creating educational software for them is a challenge that the University may like to rise to,'' he added.

Demand to constitute zonal committees

NEW DELHI: Leaders of a large number of trade bodies of the Capital under the banner of the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) have urged Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy to constitute a special task force to implement the Tejindra Khanna Committee's recommendations on unauthorised constructions and misuse of property in Delhi.

CAIT has also demanded the constitution of joint zonal committees in Delhi comprising officials and traders for suggesting modifications to Delhi Master Plan 2021. It said the trade markers in Delhi would soon formulate their "markets plans'' which would be submitted to the Union Urban Development Minister.

31 anniversary of Emergency

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), New Democracy, will organise a meeting on "Challenges to Civil Liberties Today'' at Gandhi Peace Foundation here on Monday, the 31 anniversary of imposition of Emergency in the country.

Several leaders including Surendra Mohan, Nandini Sundar, Laxman Pant, Animesh Das and Imtiaz Ahmed are expected to address the meeting.

Issues such as repression of movements for self-determination, displacement in the name of development and repression of the working class would be addressed at the meeting.

"Clearance Month" inaugurated

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Excise and Customs Chairman V.P. Singh inaugurated the "All India Drawback and Clearance Month'' organised jointly by the Department of Customs and Delhi Exporters Association this past week. July would be celebrated as the "Clearance Month".
