No end to road works being taken up during the monsoon

Special Correspondent

Despite orders issued by PWD, roads are being dug up

MANGALORE: Every monsoons it is the same story.

The Public Works Department and the Mangalore City Corporation request various departments not to dig up the roads. However, ironically, this season seems to witness most number of roads being dug up for one reason or another.

Permission

This year the Public Works Department has directed all departments not dig up roads till October 15, and those who have to take up work on the road have to obtain permission from the department.

In a similar order, the Mangalore City Corporation had issued instructions to all its departments to forbid road works being taken up in the monsoon. The corporation has reportedly told officials that road works cannot be taken up even to provide water connections to new houses.

Water connections

At any given point of time there are several applications for water connections pending with the corporation.

While the officials of the corporation follow the order and refuse to provide water connections, citizens are put through difficulty and are forced to manage till the end of the monsoon.

However, the rule is often bent for builders who dig up roads to provide water connections. It is also not applicable to telecom companies who dig up the roads during the monsoon as the earth is soft. Often the trenches are loosely filled with soil and pose a threat to two-wheelers and schoolchildren.

The Road Watchdog Committee, which is a component of the NGO Forum, here criticised the injustice meted out to ordinary people while builders and telecom companies are being given a "go by" by the Mangalore City Corporation and the Public Works Department.
