TIRUCHI: Non-inclusion of K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital by Union Ministry of Health for upgrade on a par with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, has caused resentment among the local people.

Several political parties and organisations have urged the Centre to examine the possibility of upgrading the hospital here in the wake of its recent decision to do so in the case of Government Medical College at Salem.

The local hospital was selected for upgrade on a par with the AIIMS at an outlay of Rs. 100 crore during the previous regime. It brought cheers to the people of central districts but the project was hanging fire since the United Progressive Alliance government came to power, as Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss favoured the medical college at Salem for upgrade, ignoring the earlier proposal.

Various parties and organisations which had been repeatedly pleading for upgrade of the Tiruchi hospital were shocked when the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, at its meeting held recently, decided to upgrade 13 medical institutions in the country, including the Government Medical College at Salem but not the K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital. M. Selvaraj, secretary, district unit of Communist Party of India, was disappointed. With the advantage of central location, upgrade of the local hospital would be of immense help to the residents of the district and neighbouring districts. Facilities in the hospital were not adequate to meet the requirements of burgeoning population, he claimed pressing for inclusion of the hospital as the second institution from Tamil Nadu for upgrade.

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation at its meeting held on Friday adopted a resolution pleading for upgrade of the hospital as per the announcement made earlier. The meeting called upon the Union and State Ministers hailing from the central districts to initiate steps for inclusion of the hospital in the list of the institutions for upgrade.
