Special Correspondent

"Several establishments do not have amenities for women"

CHENNAI: Trade unions should attach greater importance to issues concerning the youth, Indian Confederation of Labour secretary-general C.S. Mehrat said on Sunday.

Participating in the second national young workers conference organised by the confederation here, Mr. Mehrat said union membership among the youth was relatively low. Through education and training, unions could involve more number of the youth in their activities.

Meet planned

Confederation president Ashok Bhattacharjee inaugurated the conference and the Annai Magalir Nala Sangam (welfare organisation for mothers).

He commended the State unit of the ICL for its services to fisherfolk, particularly when the tsunami struck.

He emphasised the need for expanding the organisation among women and the youth. The ICL proposed to hold conferences in different parts of the country.

P. Balakrishnan, general secretary, All-India Cooperative Bank Employees' Federation, referred to the difficulties faced women workers.

In several establishments, there were no clean toilets for women or crèches.

He underscored the need for highlighting these issues at work places.

Krishnamurthi Padma, vice-president of the women's wing of the ICL, explained the activities of her organisation.
