Recruitment of teachers on consolidated pay ends

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Government has done away with the system of recruiting teachers in government schools on consolidated pay.

Teachers recruited on this basis by the previous government will now be paid on a timescale basis, a press release said.

With this, 53,005 teachers (19,241 in secondary grade, 29,292 graduate teachers, 2,242 postgraduate teachers and 2,230 special grade teachers) will receive timescale pay,. The Government will incur an additional expenditure of Rs 399.89 crore. While junior teachers recruited by the previous regime were paid a consolidated monthly sum of Rs. 3,000, junior graduate teachers received Rs. 4,000 and junior postgraduate teachers Rs. 4,500, the release said. The Government indicated in the Governor's address to the Assembly that considering the educational qualification of the teachers, the consolidated pay would be replaced with a timescale one and all vacancies in government schools would be filled.

All teachers working from 2003-04 will be paid on a timescale mode from June 1, the release added.
