Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 18 persons, including a policeman, were injured when two groups belonging to the same community clashed at Puthukurichi under the Kadhinamkulam police station limits on Sunday evening. According to the police, six houses, two fishing boats and some outboard engines were destroyed in the violence that broke out around 4 p.m. The issue started when persons suspected to be Left Democratic Front (LDF) supporters attacked a Class X student, Anil, who owes allegiance to the pro-Congress Powra Samiti. The incident occurred in the morning. By 3.30 p.m., nearly 150 persons gathered on the Puthukurichi beach. They split into two groups and started attacking each other with country bombs, stones and sticks. The police have been posted in strength in the area.
